Cool real estate for sale: Nakatsu Castle

I think this is very cool. If you've got the money, you can now buy your very own Japanese castle.
Nakatsu Castle, located in Oita prefecture, in western Japan, is for sale.

The castle, a 14-minute walk from the nearest train station and just minutes away from the Sea of Japan coastline, features 5.7 acres of land bordered by a traditional stone wall and moat, with a five-story, steel-framed building. Built in 1964, the current building is a replica of the original castle, constructed in 1588.

...a third-party real-estate assessment valued the castle at 196 million yen, or $2.3 million.
Still think those Arlington condos are impressive?

  1. God I love this kind of news!!!

"Economic uncertainty is clouding that buying opportunity," said Lawrence Yun, the Realtors' chief economist. "It's still a fragile situation in the housing market."

As sales have slowed, the inventory of unsold homes on the market has risen 2.5 percent to nearly 4 million. That's a nearly nine-month supply at the current sales pace, the highest level since August. It compares with a healthy level of about six months.

Sales are likely to keep falling for three to four months, Yun said. That would likely boost the supply of unsold homes to more than 10 months for the first time since the spring of 2009. And it could push down home prices.

  2. How do you explain why housing is still in such bad shape when mortgage rates are at their lowest in 50 years?

"Mortgage rates fell to a record low for the fourth time in five weeks. But low rates haven't been enough to lift a struggling housing market.

The average rate for 30-year fixed loans this week was 4.56 percent, down from 4.57 last week, mortgage company Freddie Mac said Thursday. That's the lowest since Freddie Mac began tracking rates in 1971.

The last time home loan rates were lower was during the 1950s, when most mortgages lasted just 20 or 25years."

  3. Hey, I've been there--! It was in 1997, and I fondly remember visiting the castle during a whirlwind tour of Kyushu.
I specifically chose this castle because it was close to the train.
It's near Fukuoka, one of the nicest cities in Japan (in my opinion) and the ocean view is spectacular.
