Ed Glaeser on the population shift

Why are Republican states growing faster than Democratic states? It's the housing regulations, stupid!

  1. The zoning rules are tough in the northeast, New England especially. But more than 300 years of development and land use will do that.

I'm from Connecticut originally and would truly hate to see Western style developments tear up the countryside. So I'm totally fine with whatever Texas and Arizona wants to do.

  2. pretty interesting article. the "proselytizing undertone" isn't really that dramatic - it's common sense. on the other hand, lax regulations and building fever aren't the reason why these states are growing - they're the reason why these states have an excess of cheap property lying around, which may be the factor that eventually leads to growth.

  4. Is the comment above spam? Im not sure, but if it is, its one of the best pieces of spam ive ever seen. At least this guy can form full sentences, and its at least remotely relevant to the topic of this thread.

    What does everyone think? James?
