McCain unsure how many houses he owns

John McCain, when asked about how many houses he and his wife own, responded by saying he doesn't know.

"I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. "It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."

Lovely. When did they buy all these houses? Did John and his wife Cindy McCain dabble in real estate speculation during the bubble years? Are they in part responsible for the housing bubble?

  1. Someone recently asked him where upper class starts. He guessed somewhere about $5 mil.

I can't believe that someone so clueless is seriously considered for the Presidency.

  3. OK,

some people here apparently don't even know how rich McCain's wife is.

Yes, they have a lot of houses. When they are that rich and that focused on politics, they probably don't care how many they have. It's just not on their radar screen.

In their defense, would you rather have a president who is lower class? No, i'd rather have a president that is middle class. Something neither of the candidates are. They aren't middle class and haven't had to live hand to mouth due to taxes.

  4. MULTI HOUSING FAMILY

Though the wealth is both his and his spouse's,
And he fancies he's close to the throne,
Politicians who live in glass houses
Should know just how many they own.

  5. Quick. Exactly what stocks and how many shares of each do you own at the moment? Tell me with 100% accuracy off the cuff, or else you're "out of touch."

This story plays well as a soundbite, but is kind of a non-story.

I have a million-plus dollar Hyde Park, Chicago home that my buddy who finances Syrian terrorists helped me buy.

During the Saddleback Civil Forum both McCain and Obama were asked to define when they considered someone to be "rich". Obama said $250,000 per year. McCain's absurd $5 million per year claim appears to have been a joke. Unfortunately, when politicians make jokes—as McCain often does—their opponents hold it against them. This results in most politicians having a stick up their ass.

I didn't watch it, but from reading an L.A. Times article, it looks as if both Obama and McCain defined "rich" in terms of income, rather than wealth. Income is what you earn during a given period of time; wealth is how much you have at a given period of time. I would have defined "rich" in terms of wealth.

Terms used by the financial industry to define wealth are as follows, excluding the value of one's primary residence:

    Affluent: $100,000-$1,000,000
    High net worth: $1,000,000+
    Very high net worth: $5,000,000+
    Ultra high net worth: $30,000,000+

Good point. It is unwise for the Obama campaign to start bringing up discussions of the candidates' houses.

I was watching and it was a joke.

Nice delivery and pacing too. McCain is a sharp and funny guy.

The serious aspect of this and where it applies to this blog is that it takes about $100K/year to live a modest lifestyle in this area, Washington DC. $150K gets you a little better QOL.

Your goal is $200K. That's not just because of housing. This is a pricey area.

Thats why I always thought income taxes should be indexed to cost of living. I make about 150K a year putting me in one of those upper income "rich" brackets.

If I lived in say Des Moines, Iowa and made my salary, you could afford a huge house, a very nice car, and plenty of stuff. Out there, you really could say I was rich because the cost of living is soooo cheap.

By contrast, I live in one of the more expensive cities in the US. Here my salary allows me to own a 1200sf house, drive a 10 year old car, and have one indulgence a 14 year old 17foot boat affectionately known as the "POS". Yet despite this, I pay just as many taxes as I do if I made the same amount in Iowa???

Dont get me wrong, I know I am fortunate to make as much as I do - believe me. My only point is the govt taxes me the same whether I can live a comfortable life here, or an extravagant live in Des Moines.

  13. Pity poor McCain if he loses his keys. . ."I left them in the kitchen."

OK, we know which room, but which house?

  15. It appears democrats would prefer to have a homeless loser running for president. No successful people should run for office.

  16. The government has no business deciding who is rich or not. We don't need anymore nanny state telling us what to do. The more tax money the feds take, the more they spend. Heck, it isn't their money so they don't give a rip how it is wasted. We don't have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. Less government is for winners. Losers want more government.
