Home prices: DC vs. California and Florida

Graph: Home prices in DC proper, vs. California and Florida.

Home price data comes from the Federal Housing Finance Agency's House Price Index. Note that it only measures homes with conforming mortgages. (Homes with subprime mortgages are not counted.) Also note that the index is not adjusted for inflation.

  1. Welcome back James. For those of us who were wondering, where was the picture of your vacation spot from (we deduced it was one of many places called "Seal Cove").

  2. looks like if you werent lucky enough to move to DC and get a liar loan back in 1999, you are going to have to wait 30 years of flat prices here to buy.

  3. Notice how they are all turning flat into 2010. Hmm Interesting.

Non partisan was right, all bellcurves DID complete! Not at 1997 levels as he predicted, but he got at least one part of it right.

  4. I'm not sure I understand the relevance of comparing the house price index of DC proper to that of the states of California and Florida. Are we suppose to look at this graph and say, "wow, I guess the wildly speculative real estate markets in places like Stockton, CA and Miami, FL and their subsequent bust really are having a significant effect on those states' price indexes."

  5. I would like to see an inflation-adjusted graph for this data.

  6. mmmmm....no, that is not a bell-shaped curve.

It is more like a shephards crook shape. Probably a good shape to hook around someone's neck and yank them off of the stage.

Time will tell if the hook fits my neck, or the sound of the bell tolls for thee...

you need to lose the McDonalds mentality, have a seat at a nice place, and wait for your meal

Hey, im just giving you every opportunity to back out or recant your position. I think we originally agreed to revist this in one year, you now have 9 more months to go.

I dont know if you have noticed, but that dude has been saying the same thing since prices started dropping.....

guess what? They have and continue to drop! If anyone is on the losing end of you two, its you.

Talk smack when prices actually start going up, otherwise you sound like a bitter moron.

  10. It's hard to believe that DC's housing index would surpass California's, but it just shows how bad things have become out west.

You would think that compairing things like quality of life, culture and class. California snuffs DC in all of that...

but when you are talking about higher paid office desk jobs for the average joe, DC beats out cali 10 fold. California may have more millionaires and billionaires on a whole too, but average up all the office jobs DC has and you will see why its index has sustained.

You also have to factor in Californias bubble burst before anyone elses....DC's bubble busting just started about 2 months ago, we have about 4 or 5 more years of price declines

Do you have any idea how silly this kind of talk is? I mean, it sounds like something a 13 year old might say...

I've lived in LA and SF. And let me tell you, some of it is "classy", some of it's not.

The question of who has greater "cultural" opportunities is far from resolved.

Finally, I suppose if you have no friends, no hobbies, and no family connections whatsoever, then "quality of life" is pretty cut-and-dried.

It's like it's always 1970, and Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More...

I wasn't comparing van nuyes with the heart of cracktown pg county. I was talking "the classy of LA" vs "the pseudo wannabe class of arlington/georgetown/whatever"

hands down, you will find better food, better entertainment, better hobbies and better people in LA. Its just a fact.

Yeah DC has some mean Lebanese kabob and Indian buffet places to eat at on your lunch break from your government office job. HA! DC sucks.

DC is only good for a government job, and thats all it is. Nothing more, nothing(everything?) less. Nobody thinks culture and class when they think DC, they think of sweaty white guy in a suit spending their tax money.
